Picks from 2011-2012

Icenetwork.com posted an article with picks by some of their correspondents. I decided to do the same ’cause it seemed fun. Agree or disagree? Link to your blog in the comments or just comment!

Best program: Hands down Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje’s “Je Suis Malade” FD. Passion and storytelling all well executed. I love this program to pieces. They are the World bronze medalists of my heart this year.

Best performances: Both of Daisuke’s programs at the World Team Trophy. The 2012 World Champion of my heart. I’m glad that all the teams rejoiced when he won at WTT.

Best rivalry: Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir vs. Meryl Davis & Charlie White. Duh. It’s become a rivalry to the Plushenko vs. Yagudin degree without the animosity. Taking a quote (originally for Plushenko and Yagudin) from Ay-sa, if your last names aren’t Virtue & Moir or Davis & White, then don’t even bother dreaming about the gold or silver; the bronze is all you can ever get anyways.

Biggest upset: Ashley Wagner winning Four Continents over Mao Asada. Totally unexpected.

Favourite breakthrough performance: Narumi Takahashi & Mervin Tran’s “Imagine” SP. They became the surprise bronze medal contenders at Worlds because of this performance.

Best comeback story: Carolina Kostner’s slow and long comeback story is the one to look for this season. Remember the days when Carolina was a total headcase? One year in the top 10 at Worlds, the next year, beaten by the no-name #2 Italian lady, Valentina Marchei and Olympic spot jeopardized only to bomb at the Olympics? Well, forget that Carolina, she’s a lot more consistent – though her jump content has been watered down – and more importantly, World Champion. A special mention goes to Akiko Suzuki, from girl dealing with anorexia to World bronze medalist at the age of 27.

Best moment: Seeing Yuzuru Hanyu’s magical Romeo and Juliet program for the first time on THE ICE skating show. Technically not part of the season but it was the best moment.

Favourite skating outfits: Kanako Murakami’s pale blue LP dress (see above) – love the colours.

Completely agree with your pick for best performances! And in regards to best rivalry, I agree but I’m hoping next year we’ll have more of a Dai/PChiddy rivalry 😀

Unfortunately, Worlds is in London, Ontario next year and Skate Canada will go a-politicking again. I’d be surprised if PChiddy doesn’t achieve a world record at Worlds. That and there will be less booing because most Canadians are prone to cheering and lauding any Canadian no matter what they do.
